Sensor Networks

Acoustic &Sensor Networks

A sensor network is a fleet of small computers installed on poles and rooftops, exposed to weather, power interruptions, and network conditions nobody would accept in a data center. Each one needs an identity, a configuration, a firmware lifecycle, and a way to tell you it has stopped working.

Mentat builds that layer. Devices are provisioned with cryptographic identity at first boot, configured from version control, monitored continuously, and updated in staged waves so a bad firmware release affects ten devices rather than ten thousand.

On the data side, the challenge is that detection systems produce false positives and every false positive has a cost. We build the measurement infrastructure that makes tuning an evidence-based exercise instead of an argument.

What we build

The infrastructure underneath

Provisioning at fleet scale

Bringing a thousand devices online should not require a thousand manual steps or a technician with a laptop at every pole.

  • ✓Zero-touch enrollment with per-device cryptographic identity
  • ✓Configuration delivered from version control, never hand-edited
  • ✓Automatic certificate rotation before expiry causes an outage
  • ✓Decommissioning that fully revokes credentials and access

Telemetry & fleet health

A sensor that has been silently offline for six weeks is worse than no sensor, because coverage maps still show it as active.

  • ✓Heartbeat, power, connectivity, and environmental telemetry
  • ✓Coverage maps that reflect live device state, not the install plan
  • ✓Alerting on degradation before a unit fails completely
  • ✓Field-service workflows driven by actual device condition

Detection quality & tuning

Every detection system trades false positives against missed events. We build the instrumentation that makes that trade-off visible and adjustable.

  • ✓Outcome labeling so precision and recall can be computed, not guessed
  • ✓Per-site and per-condition performance breakdowns
  • ✓Threshold changes tested against historical data before rollout
  • ✓Honest reporting on confirmed, unconfirmed, and false detections

Field security

A device on a pole is physically accessible to anyone with a ladder. The security model has to assume that.

  • ✓Mutual TLS for all device-to-platform communication
  • ✓Tamper detection and automatic credential revocation
  • ✓No shared secrets and no default credentials anywhere in the fleet
  • ✓Least-privilege device permissions scoped to their actual function

How we get there

A delivery sequence that holds up

01

Establish device identity

Every unit gets a unique, revocable cryptographic identity at manufacture or first boot, which becomes the basis for all trust decisions.

02

Automate the lifecycle

Configuration and firmware flow from version control through staged rollout rings with automatic rollback on failure signals.

03

Instrument everything

Health telemetry and detection outcomes both flow into the same platform, so coverage and accuracy are observable in one place.

04

Tune on evidence

Threshold and model changes are evaluated against labeled historical data before they reach the field.

Governance & safeguards

Detection systems deserve honest accounting

Acoustic detection in particular has drawn sustained questions about accuracy and deployment equity. A program that measures itself rigorously and publishes what it finds is in a fundamentally stronger position than one that cannot answer basic questions about its own performance.

Performance is measured, not asserted

Confirmed detections, unconfirmed alerts, and false positives are tracked as first-class data with per-site breakdowns available for review.

Coverage is transparent

Where sensors are deployed, and where they are not, is documented and reportable, which is often the first question oversight bodies ask.

Audio handled narrowly

Capture scope, retention, and access are constrained to the detection purpose and enforced by the platform rather than by vendor assurance.
